About two & a half years ago I hired a nutrition coach to calculate my macros. I wanted a lifestyle change. I was eating around 1200-1400 calories per day, had no energy, my body wasn't changing, and I had high anxiety around food. At this point, I wasn't looking for a quick fix, 8 week program, or temporary plan. I wanted to implement something in my life where I was going to see long term results while still participating in birthday dinners, vacations, or any type of gathering where food is involved. Counting macros is not a "quick fix." It requires dedication, time, preparation, & patience. Within two months of counting my macros I started to really understand how food is fuel, and learned that a nonrestrictive and flexible approach was working for me.
Before I started tracking, I was at a very low caloric intake for my body type & activity level. I had to reverse diet in order to get myself to a healthier caloric maintenance. I started to feel better, my anxiety regarding food quickly decreased, my confidence improved, my energy levels increased immensely, & then started losing inches (but I was eating more!!!). My overall transformation took over two years. I still count macros, have done a few "cuts", and continue to reverse diet where I have established a high caloric maintenance. I have blended macros into intuitive eating at certain points, which has improved my relationship with food. It has taught me portion control, accountability, and has been a game changer when it came to reaching my physique and fitness goals. This all circles back to a lifestyle change. Progress was slower than any other diet approach I had tried, but it lasted and I continue to feel better physically, mentally, and emotionally everyday.
